MEET THE WOMEN POWERING TECH TRANSFORMATION IN ROMANIA
DB Global Technology, Deutsche Bank’s technology centre in Romania, is helping shape the future of banking by creating clear pathways for women in tech to progress into impactful roles.
We spoke with three women leading that change. In this post, they share their journeys, the work they’re proud of, and why Romania is fast becoming a hub of opportunity for women in technology.
- Simona – Senior Delivery Manager
- Oana – Lead Engineer
- Cosmina – Android Chapter Lead
Q&A
How did you first get into tech, and what attracted you to building a career in Romania’s tech hub?
Simona: I studied technology in high school and later built experience across both business and FinTech sectors. I joined Deutsche Bank’s technology centre in Romania 11 years ago because it allowed me to combine both worlds: delivering high-quality tech solutions with the client at the core. The centre’s ambitious growth plans, strong learning culture and leadership opportunities made it a great fit.
Oana: I wanted to apply what I learned at university, but my start in tech wasn’t easy. I didn’t pass several interviews at first. Eventually, I joined a small offshore company and that opportunity kickstarted my career. From there, I kept learning and growing.
Cosmina: I was drawn to tech through problem-solving and building things people actually use. Android development stood out because of its real-world impact at scale. Deutsche Bank’s technology centre in Romania attracted me because of its strong engineering community and the chance to work on globally used applications.
What challenges have you faced as a women in tech, and how have they shaped your career?
Simona: Sometimes you need to put in extra effort to be heard and recognised, which pushes you to become highly effective, resilient, and adaptable. It is rewarding, as you can see your impact on a global scale.
Oana: I had to believe in my knowledge. Sometimes there’s more pressure to prove yourself technically, but when you know the answer, that confidence becomes your strongest asset.
Cosmina: Working in underrepresented environments pushed me to be more confident in my voice and advocate for my work. As a Chapter Lead, I support and mentor my team by creating an inclusive environment where people feel empowered.
What has your experience been working as a women in tech at Deutsche Bank, and how does it support women in tech?
Simona: At DB Global Technology, the environment is highly collaborative and agile. I have worked in Finance Technology (FinTech) for 20 years, which has given me the opportunity to become the anchor for the new generation. I lead the Diversity initiative locally, which actively supports women progressing into senior roles and improves retention. And as a Senior Delivery Manager, I’ve seen first-hand how diverse perspectives lead to better decisions, stronger products and more resilient organisations.
Oana: Deutsche Bank has one of the strongest diversity and inclusion cultures I’ve seen. There are dedicated training programmes, career coaching and initiatives designed to help women grow and support one another.
Cosmina: My experience has been very empowering. Expertise, ownership and results truly matter here, and diverse perspectives are encouraged. Initiatives like Code First Girls play a critical role in building confidence, skills and visibility for women. They help create a more sustainable tech pipeline and send a clear message that women belong in technical and leadership roles. This benefits not just individuals but the entire tech ecosystem.
Looking at your own journey, what steps, decisions or training have helped advance your career?
Simona: Having a strong work ethic allowed me to view obstacles and challenges as opportunities to learn and grow. There is no such thing as right timing, you don’t need to wait for the wave, you can create the wave. This will take you to the next level in your tech career.
Oana: The constant openness to knowledge – knowledge about the software you work on, new and innovative technologies and the business impact of technology. I do not limit myself by saying ‘this is not my job’. This has helped me advance in my career much quicker.
Cosmina: I made a conscious decision to continuously invest in my technical foundation while also developing leadership and communication skills. Taking ownership of complex projects, seeking feedback early and learning from strong mentors accelerated my growth. Being intentional about growth opportunities, even when they feel uncomfortable, helped me build confidence, adaptability, and a long-term leadership mindset..
What key skills or knowledge should mid-level technologists be building to stay ahead?
Simona: Staying ahead means building the right mix of technical knowledge, business understanding and emotional intelligence. My advice is to strengthen your technical knowledge on AI system design, cloud platform and security fundamentals. Beyond technical skills, collaboration and networking are some of the most powerful accelerators for women in tech. And finally, take initiative – this is how you shape culture, not just code.
Oana: Don’t panic about AI – it’s another tool to make you more efficient. Tech constantly evolves, so you have to keep learning. Understanding modern architectures, APIs and development practices helps you stay relevant and effective.
Cosmina: AI and automation are accelerating and it is important to know how to integrate AI responsibly into products. One of the biggest trends in the mobile landscape, especially for Android, is AI-driven, personalised experiences. These are apps that predict user needs, adapt contextually and even run AI on devices for privacy and speed.
What advice would you give to women in Romania who are considering a career in tech?
Simona: In Romania’s IT industry, approximately 30% of the tech talent are women, making it one of the top three EU states for female representation in the sector. Technology is dynamic and full of opportunity – your voice and contributions could shape the future of technology.
Oana: It will be hard work at times, but there is a role for everyone. Find what you enjoy, build confidence and trust that you are capable, even when things feel difficult.
Cosmina: Believe in your abilities and embrace curiosity. Seek out mentors, build a strong network and don’t be afraid to take on challenges that stretch your skills. A career in tech is both rewarding and empowering.
