HOW CARTRAWLER RESKILLED THEIR EMPLOYEES INTO TECH

In 2024, CarTrawler partnered with Code First Girls for the launch of a CFGdegree programme for employee reskilling. The programme empowered employees with valuable technical skills to advance their careers and was delivered under Code First Teams. Participants learnt the fundamentals of coding, as well as being provided with the opportunity to join the Product & Technology team as a Junior Software Engineer.

  • 19 participants from different internal functions (Business, Finance, Revenue & Customer) participated in foundational coding training in JavaScript
  • Two employees were then selected for the 16-week CFGdegree, both joining the Product & Technology team as Junior Software Engineers

THE PROBLEM

Ireland's skills shortage is a barrier to growth

CarTrawler is the leading B2B technology provider of car rental and mobility solutions to the travel industry, and therefore recognised the need to address the skills shortage impacting growth in the tech sector. According to the Central Statistics Office (CSO), women accounted for just 25.9% of STEM professionals in Ireland in 2020 and 94% of tech employers in Ireland reported skills shortages as one of the main barriers to growth. Therefore, Dublin-based CarTrawler saw Code First Girls as a means of building internal tech talent through employee reskilling. Additionally, the programme supported their Advancing Gender Equity programme to address the under-representation of women in technology roles.

THE SOLUTION

1. Kickstarting employees careers in tech

CarTrawler chose to partner with Code First Girls because they’re the largest provider of free coding courses and employment opportunities for women globally. Together, we built a strategy that would offer free coding training to 19 women currently employed by CarTrawler in Ireland. These employees sat across a number of different internal functions such as People, Business, Finance, Product & Technology, Revenue, Customer. The foundational Coding Kickstarter was an Introduction to Javascript course that aimed to support their career development in software engineering.

2. Reskilling employees into tech roles

After the Kickstarter course, CarTrawler selected two employees from their Customer and Finance teams to advance onto 16 weeks of specialised training in software engineering and full-stack. Upon completion, the candidates had the opportunity to join CarTrawler’s Product & Technology team as Junior Software Engineers.

3. Building a tech talent pipeline in Ireland

Alongside supporting employees to transition into tech roles, our partnership upskilled over 50 women in the local area in tech.
